The 'Beef Cattle 101 Series' launched in August 2019 in Barnesville, Georgia. This project was the result of months of hard work, collaboration, conversation between multiple agencies, and the willingness of the Lamar County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) Board in Barnesville.
This innovative series was the first of its kind in the state of Georgia, full of hands-on information and techniques surrounding land, natural resource, and beef cattle herd management for landowners and farmers in central Georgia.
I served as program coordinator of the series, working alongside the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Field Office in Barnesville. I created flyers, issued press releases, sent out newsletters, and promoted the new series at local farmer events in the Barnesville area. We also secured a $100,000 USDA-NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant to help fund the program for its first year.
